Precious

 “Precious Tymes" by Jarold Imes

Folks thought KaShamba Williams, better known as “Precious” was crazy for writing what has become the Platinum Teen Series.

“Why” she recounts as she is gearing up for the release of the highly anticipated and much waited for third book in the series, Runaway. The overwhelmingly positive response to the first two books, Dymond in the Rough & The Ab-Solute Truth have kept young men and women who are more familiar with Blinded, Grimey, Driven & At the Courts Mercy on the edge of their seats waiting for the next installment. Precious, as she is better known around these parts saw an opportunity to fill a void for Street/Urban/Hip-Hop literature on a teen level.

Her motivation, her soon to be fourteen year old daughter who was not old enough to read any of the books she had written for adults.

“She in turn said to me, ‘Why would you write books that I can't read?’ I was speechless!” Precious tells me. “We heavily promote literacy in our household. I didn't have an answer for her question. As much as I shoved books in her hands and she absorbed them all, the books that I'd written, she couldn't even read! I extremely contradicted myself. I decided from that day forward I would write a teen book that my daughter and other teens her age could enjoy.”

Now her daughter and other fourteen year olds have nothing to worry about. Dymond in the Rough & The Ab-Solute Truth were both selected for the National Library Association mandatory teen readings for libraries across the nation. Precious intends to make The Platinum Teen Series a twelve book series. In addition, to Runaway, The Best Kept Secret, Shannon's Revenge, Bad Boys and Black Princess are just a slew of titles Precious intends to bring to the forefront in 2007 & 2008.

“I would like to see other authors producing quality teen novels that this age group can enjoy. Instead, of them reading our adult novels.” Precious responded when asked what she would like to see happen in young adult fiction that is not happening now, “Growing up, there weren't many African-American teen authors so I read Judy Blume, The Sweet Valley High Series, The Babysitter's Club, etc.”

I agree with Precious when she states that “any book that I write whether it’s adult or teen there's always a message. I want readers to be educated, empowered and entertained.”

She calls it “empertainment,” I say I’m glad I finally have some books that are urban that I can bring into the class room.

Dymond in the Rough & The Ab-Solute Truth are available from the site. Runaway will be available by the end of this month.
